TOPIC: Parted Magic on iMac not finding Chronos Deluxe

Parted Magic on iMac not finding Chronos Deluxe 1 year 1 month ago #1024

I have a 2011 iMac (Sandy Bridge) with a Chronos Deluxe 240GB.

I have an intermittent wake from sleep problem I've been chasing for months. When it wakes from sleep and after I login, sometimes I can't run any new processes and nothing appears in the console log. I can use existing processes to limited extent. It feels like the OS can't write to the SSD. The SSD is the main boot drive (no RAID).

I wanted to updated firmware, to see if it makes it better. I made the Parted Magic DVD and booted it.

The SF Field Updater x32 runs but doesn't detect the Chronos Deluxe so I can't update the firmware. From what I can tell, bios is in AHCI mode.

What do I do?

Hi,

What version of Parted Magic did you use?
Does the updater open?

What is the current fw on the SSD?

6.7 I guess. I followed the instructions in the 507 thread stuck to the top of this forum. I downloaded this file: pmagic-6.7.iso-x86_64.zip

The SF Field Updater x32 does indeed open and does a scan, but no SSD shows up. I click the scan button again and still no SSD found. It scans for maybe 30 seconds before coming back with no SSD. No error either. Just doesn't show any SSD.

I don't know the current fw version on my Chronos Deluxe as the SF Field Updater can't see it. All I have to go on is what the iMac system information shows me about the SSD:

Capacity: 240.06 GB (240,057,409,536 bytes)
Model: MKNSSDCR240GB-DX
Revision: 332ABBF0
Serial Number: MKN1208A0000051723
Native Command Queuing: Yes
Queue Depth: 32
Removable Media: No
Detachable Drive: No
BSD Name: disk1
Medium Type: Solid State
TRIM Support: No
Bay Name: SSD
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified

If Parted Magic was going to work that would be the version to use, something else is blocking the updater from detecting the drive.
You have firmware revision 332.

To update the firmware at this point you have two choices, remove the drive and update it in a PC with Parted Magic.
The other option would be to use Windows 7 with bootcamp, but you would also need to hack the MBR so that Windows will be in AHCI mode.
