I have a new Mushkin Scopion Deluxe 240GB PCI SSD. I am using it as the main hard drive and it has windows 8.1 pro installed on it. Fresh Install on a brand new build: ASUS Z97 Deluxe with Intel i7-4790k processor and 16Gb Ram. Its installed in the PCIEX1_1 slot.

There are a couple of things I have been somewhat surprised with.

Firstly, the really slow boot times. It takes on average 1:20 to boot. With the LSI Corporation screen the longest at 40 seconds.

Secondly using crystal mark I'm not getting the read/write speeds (particularly write) I have seen quoted with this disk and in reviews. See attached.

Can anyone shed some light on these issues?

Hi,

The boot time is normal, it just takes time to load the LSI optrom and initialize everything.

What do you get in ATTO?
You can download ATTO from here

I assume that you have the drive installed in the PCIE x16_1 slot, the PCIE x1_1 is the little one at the very top

I thought that was probably a typo.

The ATTO bench looks about right, you're getting 1,890MB/s writes and reads are 2,080MB/s
So the drive is getting full speeds.

Did you format the drive when you set it up or have you done a lot of benching on it?

I didn't format it, I just installed the operating system straight onto it. Should I have?

No haven't done much benching on it, maybe run CrystalMark 4 or 5 times. ATTO twice.

I purchased the drive after seeing the review at www.thessdreview.com/. They were getting much better speeds in CrystalMark.

Typically when you get full speed with ATTO, but Crystal is lower than expected it means that the NAND is dirty, has junk data in it. Normally the write speeds are most effected because the controller has to stop and erase the block before writing to it, the extra step of having to erase causes the slowdown.

Doing a full format, a quick is fine, or running a lot of benchmarks like Crystal will cause the NAND to have junk data on it. Same as doing a lot of reinstalls of the O/S or an old dirty image.

Over time the internal garbage collection will clean up the dirty NAND, and the Crystal benchmarks should improve. I would refrain from benching it for a while.
